Is oil pan replacement on 1999 suburban?

I was told that the drain plug in the oil pan was mistreaded and that the oil pan tread was also mistreaded and that I would have to replace it at a cost of $500 plus. Can something be done to retread the old oil pan and replace the drain plug to fit new treads?

You may be able to find a self tapping oversize drain plug at a parts store.
I did find a kit online but it would be more costly and more labor intensive than a S/T plug. (at etoolcart.com)


This seems to happen alot when you deal with the jiffy-lube type of shops.
Threads are only ruined when replacing a part and not when removing one.

There are universal rubber plugs designed to address your problem without pan removal or re-threading.

I tried one 20 years ago. While it made the vehicle immediately usable, I was not impressed by the seal achieved. I'll bet someone has come up with an improved version by now!
