Serpintine belt
Need help changing Serp Belt. Can anybody tell me how hard it is. Also is there anything I can read and possibly see Pics of the job. Should I change the idler rollers? My 97 has 90,000. The first two times my dealer has done the job. Trying to save money. The belt is glazed and getting small cracks.
Thanks |

Re: Serpintine belt
Unless you're hearing squeaking on the idler pully when you turn it by hand, you don't need to swap it out.
Using a 16mm socket and a long ratchet (or breaker bar) or link to box wrenches together, rotate the tension pully counter clockwise and remove the belt... The diagram for routing should be on your core support.

Re: Serpintine belt
Put it in the clothes dryer for 10 minutes to soften it up and take out the kinks.

Re: Serpintine belt
Simple if when you remove watch how it comes off. I put gloves on and just push the tensioner in and slide the belt off the top idler fixed pulley and then slowlty release the tensioner - reaching behind the tensioner to get a wrench on it was/is always a pain and it slips off. Install is reverse but if you have weak arms use the wrench. Idler goes too and about $25. The tensioner is more and aftermarket ones are a cheaper design than GM.

Re: Serpintine belt
Thanks to everyone for the help. Job took all of 15 Min. Hardest part was waiting for parts at the dealer.
