Re: rear axle noise

I am having similar issues and am afraid I'm going to lose the rear end soon. How did you go about filling it?

Re: rear axle noise

Thanks, Nut. I guess that's my real question here. I'm not much of a mechanic. Is there a drain plug on the differential and where do I put new grease in at? I really don't want to drop the pumpkin cover.

Thanks for the help!!

Re: rear axle noise

To Drain it you need to drop the pumpkin cover, also a good idea as you an check for metal filings and look for slop in the gears.

Re: rear axle noise

Good idea. Let me give you all some more information as to what I am experiencing and what I have done.

I have a hum coming from what I am fairly confidant is the rear end. I took the truck in and had an additive added to the differential (a Wynns product designed to quiet the rear end) and still have the hum. What confuses me is that the hum is only there when I have the accelerator depressed. When I let up on it and coast, the hum goes away. I assume the differential is still moving while coasting which should produce the sound still.

I am really lost on this, so any help would be much appreciated.

Re: rear axle noise

If its humming without acceleration, then it may be coming from your tranny or torque converter vs your rear end.
