Re: Cant find the fuel filter

I don't about the 2000 but the 2002 Protege has the filter built into the fuel pump, the assembly is in the fuel tank. The 02 maintenance schedule doesn't suggest or mention changing the fuel filter unless your car is in Chile where is changed every two years.

Re: Cant find the fuel filter

ya on the 95-98 it is very near the engine, much closer than most cars. so follow the fuel line from the throttle body down below the engine to the firewall. very obscurred by unrelated junk its very small cylinder black in most cases.

I do believe the next model line is 99-2002 and it has no fuel filter.

Re: Cant find the fuel filter

lol...just changed it last month on my 1995 protege. it was located between the engine and the driver's console, about a foot deep within wires. i found it resting on the car body. a very difficult job. took me two hours and misc acrobatics to take it out and fit the new one in

Yep, that's exactly where it is on my 1995 Protege as well, and it indeed looks like hell of a lot work which is why i have not changed mine yet, although would like to.

Re: Cant find the fuel filter

Hello,

from 1998 and up the fuel filter is not replacable. It's built into the gas tank. To replace it would be a huge job and cost alot of money!

According to Mazda, it's a self-cleaning fuel filter that never needs changing.

If you're concerned, get a good fuel injector additive to add to a full tank of gas, and it'll clean out your fuel system. Also, use high octane gas for long road trips.

Re: Cant find the fuel filter

There is an earlier post on this very subject I asked myself on the 2000 model year. The fuel filter in in the tank with the fuel pump and is located in the middle of the back seats. Simply lift up the lower part of the seat and you will see the access plate. Find the post that gives specfic instructions on how to remove it safely but doubtful that it needs to done on a regular basis.

Good luck,

MN Walleye

Re: Cant find the fuel filter

The above posts are mostly right. There is a screen attached to the pump that is part of the pump assembly in the tank. I wouldn't call it self cleaning. There is another filter (I changed mine at 175000 miles - 1999 protege) but it should last the life of the car. You have to remove the throttle body, intake hoses and a lot of stuff just to get to it. It's mounted to the body on the drivers side close to the firewall. I followed the fuel lines. Unless you get some really bad gas, it shouldn't require replacement. Use some sea foam injector cleaner.
