Rough day
Well it started out with draining the coolant out of my radiator, but the weld aroud the pet cock broke, so I pulled the radiator, and one of my trans cooler lines fitting spins inside the radiator, so i cut the line.
Then i went to take the thermostat housing off, was leaking from the gasket(the whole reason for my adeventure) I broke some vaccum plunger sensor off, idk what it is yet, and both bolt heads broke off that hold the housing on! Gragh! My caprice is lucky I can fix this. Just a good day I guess only problem is getting the broken bolts out the holes. ever have one of these days? lol

Three weeks ago my car decided to kill its own transmission - accumulator spring broke, leading to a sun shell failure - then the water pump completely went south (losing a gallon of water every 45 seconds, and not even through the weep holes), then the transmission shifter knob broke off in my hand (both happened last Friday), now the power steering pump buzzes and as of today the ignition key is stuck in the cylinder, which turns with massive force. Top THAT!

Re: Rough day
Well, I got the key out of the cylinder, but now you can start the car without the key. I just have to get the motivation to go out and install this new lock cylinder I got today.

Re: Rough day
Speaking of worn ignition, chew on this:
To start my white boxy, I needed the key (would not work without), but, after starting, I could remove the key from the ignition and the car would continue to run (pull the key out in the run position effortlessly). Still, the car would not START without the key in the ignition. |

Re: Rough day
my dads old s-10 does this, but it is so bad that if you dont do the lock thing after you take the key out (you know, the lock switch all standard trans cars have), you can then start the thing with no key. if you do the lock thing, you need the key.

Re: Rough day
My 88 silverado does that. You don't need the key to start it even if you do turn it back to lock. you can also turn it to accesory without the key....I actually kind like it.

Re: Rough day
I had the ignition cylinder seize up on my '79 wagon, glad i had a big pair of pliers to turn it to get home.
My '84 wagon had the key bust off in it last year and I could start it without the key, I made sure I locked it when it was parked. I ran it a few months and finally splurged $15 and changed the cylinder. Bob |

Re: Rough day
My 84 caprice does the same thing, but when I had a new set of keys made, it didn't do it with the new set until I ground down the last tooth on the tip of the key. I did that intentionally because I liked how the old set came out. I could start my car, take out the keys, lock the doors, and go inside while the car warmed up in the winter.
