Illiterate in polishing?

Hey guys,

Trying to polish a completed car, but feel like Im doing something wrong. Ive tried a few different compounds, each with the same result. After polishing and buffing out the compound, I seem to have a decent shine but always end up with pitting, where theres a number of pitted specks. Any suggestions to avoid this? I am assuming Im not sanding deep enough to get it completely smooth before hand?

THanks, Chris

Well yes you are partly right you need to make sure you sand the hole area smooth, but also make sure that your paint is completely dry and has had time to cure. Sometimes your paint maybe dry but not cured and when you try to sand the paint your paper will pick paint that is not hard enough( or cured) and that can cause pitting.

Thanks for the reply, the car I was testing it on was painted probably 20 weeks ago, so Id assume its cured, so thanks.

well 20 weeks is plenty of time, just dont bare down too hard when sanding and inspect your paint very carefully because dust particles can cause pitting as well.
