Question 2003 P1406 code

We have a 2003 Windstar/3.8L v6/auto and the check engine light came on. The only code that came up was the P1406 (Differential Pressure Feedback Electronic Sensor circuit Downstream Hose). Any ideas or help on how to tackle this?

Re: 2003 P1406 code

Hi
I am assuming you are not at all familiar with DPFE. Forgive me if I am wrong. I looked online at an '03 winnie, and from the picture your DPFE (Differential Pressure Feedback EGR , I think) sensor looks to be attached to the front left (drivers side) of the intake manifold, just above and to the right of the oil dipstick. It is clearly visible in the photo where described, about 11/2" X 31/2" in size with an electrical plug, and two hoses coming off of the bottom. Cannot tell you which is the upstream/downstream hose, but I'll wager you find one disconnected, broken off, cracked or otherwise open. In any case many of us have replaced our DPFE's on various model years due to failures and engine codes. Unless you find an obviously damaged hose, with an otherwise intact DPFE, you will probably want to replace the sensor. It should run around $50, and if you buy at autozone or similar, it may be called the EGR valve position sensor as that is its function.
If you search the forum for DPFE you will see many other posts. I have not dealt with your exact code, but have dealt with a similar 1400's code that pointed to a disconnected (broken off actually) hose on the DPFE. In other words, the code pointed dead on to the problem. I am hoping the same in your case.

Best of Luck

Yep, the DPFE sensor is a snap to replace! Unplug it, yank it off the steel sensing lines and replace.

Check with your local dealer, it might still be covered under warranty if the mileage on the van isn't too high.
