Quad 4 Grand Am vs. Eclipse

Today at work with my dad he told me to fix the brakes lines on his beater Grand Am, a 1990 with a Quad 4 and automatic. After I was done me and my dad roadtested it (I drove). My dad's shop is located right on a main drag so it's always been fun to roadtest cars. On my way back i was at a a redlight, a 97-99 Eclipse RS/GS, I know it wasn't turbo, pulled on the side of me with a couple kids in it. I looked at them and new they were laughing at the Grand Am(if only the looked at the 16-Valve badge on the front fender). My dad said go(he already knew) so when the light turned green I just stood on it. I'm pretty sure the Eclipse was a 5-speed and it stayed with me right off the line until I hit about 3000 rpm(I was paying attention more to the tach than the speedo)and I didn't see it anymore. I know got to about 65 then my dad told me it was enough. The Eclipse was about 2-2.5 car lengths behind me.
I love Quad 4's. This lil' pos Grand Am is a pretty good sleeper.

1990 Grand Am LE Coupe
16-Valve DOHC 2.3-Liter "Quad-4" In-Line 4
160 Horsepower, 150 lb-ft of Torque
Curb Weight 2580 lbs.

Not bad specs for a 16-year old car.

Re: Quad 4 Grand Am vs. Eclipse

Nice kill. My friend had a 1991 grand am inline 4. Would that have the quad-4 in it also? Cause we always made fun of his "slow" car, but i was actually never with him when he got on the gas so i dont know how slow it really was.

Re: Quad 4 Grand Am vs. Eclipse

Not all 4-cylinder Grand Am's are Quad 4's. It was an option on the LE's and standard on the SE's. The standard motor the "Iron Duke" OHV 2.5 which only made around 110 horsepower and wasn't a reliable engine at all. But then again neither were most of the Quad's. If it had the 2.5 it was pretty slow then, nowhere near a Quad 4.
