2001 Avalon XLS remote fob won't open trunk

Anyone have experience with troubleshooting the remote fob operating the trunk release? The electric latch operates fine from the dash switch.

In order to open the trunk using the remote make sure you hold the trunk release button on the remote for at least 3 seconds.
