Project: Rally Beater

OK so me and my brother are wanting to buy a beater and use it for a rally machine/weapon of destruction and terror. We would like to pick up the car for a few hundred. We just want something that runs well with a MT and preferably AWD or RWD, but that isn't necessary.

You guys have any ideas on the types of cars we should be on the lookout for? Aesthetics don't matter, as the car will be gutted and put on a diet of the most extreme sorts. Also, it would be nice if it had at least 2 wheel disc brakes. Ideas?

Re: Project: Rally Beater

Finding a car that runs well for a 'few hundred' doesnt leave alot of options..

Buy a 3rd gen Camaro though.. thats what I recommend anyway.

You can usually find a early Subie wagon at repo auctions for a few hundred.

Re: Project: Rally Beater

Guess I was a tad vague. By runs well I mean can accelerate without exploding. A little oil-burning just makes it more interesting. As for the camaro, I would prefer something a little lighter, since the lightweight(after I'm done with it) will be what gives it a reasonable amount of acceleration.

Re: Project: Rally Beater

A friend of mine just bought an old '84 Rabbit for $400 from a government auction; works great.

Re: Project: Rally Beater

try to pick up an old corolla. I know there are a lot of aftermarket parts for 96 corollas. They also have really strong engines, so you could beef it up.

oh yeah, that's a FWD... I don't know then. Maybe a fiero... are they RWD?

Rally, if he was looking for a speedboat, you'd still tell him to buy a 3rd gen camaro... but I admire your consistency

Fiero is RWD, just make sure it doesn't burst into flames on you

Re: Project: Rally Beater

Old Subarus or old VWs (Mk1 or Mk2 Golfs mainly) work well. Also, early Talon/Eclipse/Lasers, rear-drive Corollas if you can still find a cheap one, etc. etc.

That is funny but I get what you mean.. I just think people should experience em a bit more. Also 3rd gen Camaros for one in mint condition go for 3K max unless there's something special with it or looow miles.

Im just saying that my choice in what car to advise him to get is justified.. and if there was a speedboat shaped/built like a 3rd gen Camaro, i'd buy it.

Re: Project: Rally Beater

An old CRX can be fun... mine was modded to hell when I took it on gravel access roads and it was awesome. Even with a relatively stock engine it was fun for a FWD. My suspension is old and tired now though. I've pretty much parked the CRX and now I'm looking for maybe a VW hatch to have some fun with. GL with your quest. I'd say anything small from the late eighties or early nineties would be cool. An old eighties MR2 would be fun too if you could find one...

Great hill climb cars, shit rally cars.

Toyota Corrolas are a great rally cars, simple, strong, with lots of suspension travel.

Re: Project: Rally Beater

Older corolla would be cool. I think an old Audi would be sweet. I see them going for pretty cheap now.

Re: Project: Rally Beater

anything from early 90's or before are fun. most of them are much lighter than the currently available cars so you could have some good fun with them.
