92 T-bird shifter problem

The shifter sticks in park. If I hold the shifter and give the button a good swat, it will move out of park and act normal untill I put it in park again. How do I fix this? What a pain in the butt.

Thanks

Bob

Have you tried taking it apart to see if there's anything gummed-up or broken in there? I'd try that before anything else, but I'm a cheap bastard...

So am I. I'm going to pull off the center console tonight and give it a look. I believe it's a bent or broke part.

Do you have to have the brake peddle depressed inorder to take it out of park?

Yep. I'm wondering if the connection between the brake and the shifter is at fault. When I left work yesterday, it shifted out of park fine....once, then the problem returned. How does the brake pedal interact with the lock out on the shifter? Mechanical or electrical?

Re: 92 T-bird shifter problem

The shifter button is the problem. Take it out of the shifter. You'll probably notice a groove worn into the angled piece that pushes down the shifter rod.i corrected issue by cutting a piece of thin black plastic to fit in the slot, and glued it in. Works like a charm.

Re: 92 T-bird shifter problem

I finally found a remedy to the shifting problem. I traded the T-bird in for a 04 Honda Element in September. Works fine now. Really, the problem was the brake light switch.
