bad bearings in accesory..which one?

i woulnd t have double posted, but was advised to do so.

I have a 96 CV pi with 160k.
by dead reckoning, i believe either the PS pump or the alternator is producing a loud high pitched cyclical squeak.

Squeaking goes away under moderate load.

Is there any way to tell for sure without possibly replacing the wrong one?

also, should i run it without the belt to rule out cams?

It may be a idler or tensioner bearing also. Remove the belt and spin the pulleys by hand ans see if one is rough. They are not that expensive and easily changed. Have never heard a P/S pump make a squeak yet, but there is always a first time. Alternators have been known to fry a bearing. I would look at the pulleys and belt first.

Both bearings and pullies are EXACTLY the same part, so knowing that one is bad, just purchase the idler assembly and you will have what you need which ever it turns out to be.

BTW, the aftermarket idlers and tensioners are MORE $$$ than the dealer!
