Tips for putting the gas tank back into place on a 1993 Jimmy.
Goodness MERCY
I dropped the tank okay to replace a fuel pump, but putting it back up there is a nightmare. What tips do you guys have. The evap line and the main fuel line where you fill up at the station are near if not impossible to connect as you are lifting up the tank....My wife and I tried for 3 hours until we about killed each other out of sheer frustration - there's got to be a better way. ANY TIPS? |

Use a floor jack or a mini floor jack and a block of wood to raise the tank. I just put my tank back in my 95 and did it by my self. You can pick up a mini floor jack at WalMart for about 25-30 bucks.

Re: Tips for putting the gas tank back into place on a 1993 Jimmy.
just did a fuel pump on my girls 93 Jimmy, not last weekend but the weekend before.
It is a pain getting it back up there, I agree. One thing I did to give myself more room under the rear of the car is I took out the spare tire (4Dr model, under the car). With the car lifted to the extent of the jack stands, I was able to comfortably sit under the car in the area where the spare tire goes. From there I was able to just reach over the rear axle and access everything on the rear of the gas tank. I think this made things MUCH easier than trying to lay on the ground and get it all connect by feel. Being able to see everything easily and clearly made it nice. -Get the tank under the car and lift the front sorta into position and have it sit on that ledge that is under where the gas tank sits when installed, you'll know what I mean. -Then get a jack and a piece of wood under the tank, in the middle and lift it up a bit. -Once you have it lifted a bit you can try pulling the tank forward and get that front hose connected. It's a very tight place and was difficult to do with that plastic guard in the way but it can be done. Once that hose is connected, don't let the tank move to much or it pop off again. Atleast this one did because the hose was so short, not sure if all of those hoses are that short or if it was just this one. -Once you have the front hose connected, lift the tank a little more and make sure it's pushed over towards the frame rail. You can probably get the front tank strap on at this point. Just get the nut on there so the tank doesn't move much but don't tighten it all the way. -Next, slowly start lifting the rear of the tank and line up the filler tubes with the tank. You'll probably have to go slow as you get them lined up. Once they are lined up you probably need to help the tubes go all the way into the rubber hoses. Then tighten those up. -Now you should be able to put the rear strap on the tank. Just get it started, enough to hold the tank in place while you finish but not tightening it all the way just yet. Now you can remove the jack from under the car. -Connect the rubber hose to the vent thing on the back of the tank. -Connect the rubber lines to the sending units hard lines. -Connect the electrical plug to the fuel pump. -Tighten the tank straps all the way. -Go over everything and make sure it's all tight and secure. -Put the spare tire back in. -Lower the car. -Clean up. Hope this helps you.

Re: Tips for putting the gas tank back into place on a 1993 Jimmy.
On my 93 I can see the fuel lines from the drivers side rear wheel well and theres enough room to put my hands in between the frame and the body to reach and install / remove the fuel lines (this is with the tank and plastic tank shield still installed)
Another thing I have seen done (on my 91 jimmy, previous owner did it) is to add some extra fuel injection hose to lengthen the lines. ** Just make sure to use 2 fuel injection clamps on each end so the pressure dosent blow it apart. **
