thinking about trading

Hey all,
I'm thinking about trading my '05 Z71 ext. cab (Silverado) for a new Tacoma. Mileage is killing me! I drive 50 miles a day round trip. I get almost 17 mpg. I'm wanting a 4x4 reg cab. Can I expect to get enough of an increase to justify trading? Any info will be appreciated.
Thanks.
Joe

Re: thinking about trading

If you get the 4 cyl you will get about 22-24 on the highway. The V6 is no better than your current motor. Honestly though, you won't save any money. A small bump in milage will not off set the depreciation, taxes, and other costs incured when buying a vehilce.

You should be doing better on the highway than 17. I have an 02 ex cab with the 5.3 and manage 20. You just have to keep your speed down to 60-65 and keep your foot out of it.

Re: thinking about trading

New car dealers are loaded with big vehicles so you cannot expect to receive a big trade in on your Silverado. If your truck has a V8 you may not like a 4 cylinder Tacoma. I have a 04 extended cab 2 wheel drive 2.4 Tacoma and I get about 24 mpg on extended trips. If you get a vehicle that gets 24 mpg you will save about one gallon of gas per trip. Assume you work 5 days/week 52 weeks/year, at today's prices you will save about $800 on fuel. If you can trade for $5k (I'm guessing, but it will probably be more) difference it will take over 6 years to recover the trade in cost. As TcmaBoy said try slowing down about 5mph, it will only add about 5 minutes to your trip and may save a couple of gallons of gas per week.

Re: thinking about trading

I 2nd NOT trading it in for a few reasons. The main one is that the new tacoma V6 versions are costly. Last time I looked, the things were almost 28k out the door. That and they get like 15 MPG... probably worse than your silverado.
