ac light blinks and ac stops cooling.

I have a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu. The ac indicator light blinks and then the ac stops cooling. If I switch speeds on the fan control dial, the light comes back on (only temporarily) and the ac starts to cool again. After a minute, sometimes just a few seconds, the light goes out again. Anyone have an ideas as to what could be the cause of this? Is it something that can be fixed by replacing the button, or does the whole control panel need to be replaced? Thanks.
