I now have an odd high pitched squeak, only when Im backing up slowly.

I would check the universal joints.

Re: squeak in reverse!
Can you be a bit more descriptive about the noise, and the conditions leading up to the noise? Does it do this whether your foot is on the brake or not? Does it get louder as you come to a stop? I think I'd be checking the rear brakes. Since I'm not sure what year and model we're talking about, I suspect something in the self adjusting mechanism inside the rear drums.
I have never heard a U-joint squeak, maybe they can do this, but at low speeds? All I have ever heard out of a bad U-Joint is a Klunk in reverse or an airplane noise at high speeds in forward. It never hurts to grease your U-Joints, but I think you've got other issues.

When they are really dry they will squeak.

Once they squeak you might as well replace them. Seeing they probably are damaged.

Re: squeak in reverse!
They can squeak when going into reverse and when accelerating.

The U joints were just replaced about a year ago. I really need to do a full lube job- I (supposedly) had one done at Midas when I got an oil change and tire rotation, but I kind of doubt if they got all the grease fittings or not. How long should I expect it to take me to do the full grease job? Bearing in mind this will be my first time. |

Re: squeak in reverse!
About an hour or so.
DO NOT TRUST LUBE SHOPS< THEY ONLY GO FOR THE EASY FITTINGS. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=344505 These are the ones you have to hit. For the balljoints, take the weight off of the wheels to get grease in them, jack the weigh off one side and grease them, then do the other side. All the others can be done normally. If you have a 4x4, remove the undrcarraige plates to get to the idler and pitman arm one. ![]() For the u-joint you will have to get a grease gun adapter to get into the fitting seeing the space is too tight to get it with a standard grease gun end. Put enough grease into it until grease pops out of the four round end caps. The attachment kinda goes into the zerk off xenter to put the grease in. You will see when you do it. Don't be shy with grease at all. Grease everything until they are plump (ball joints and tierod ends) or grease starts to come out of the part.

Re: squeak in reverse!
Some of the u-joints don't have grease fittings and you should replace it with one that does.
