Unhappy AF hurts.

Just got back from the doc, apparently my one-finger chicken pecking that passes for typing is causing me nerve damage in my wrist and elbow...

Have to severely curtail the activities of my left arm for at least 3 weeks, and either change my habits or cut down my posting dramatically

Can anybody link me to a good freeware typing skills program,or a page on computer ergonomics?

thanks

When I started work (back in the dark ages) as a budding young beancounter I realised I was going to spending many hours slaving over a keyboard.

So realising my two finger prodding wasn't going to cut 70 hours weeks doing Excel 1.0A worksheets on my Apple Macintosh SE (I told you this was in the dark ages) I invested ten nights at night school learning to touch type. I was (un)fortunate to have to learn on a manual typewriter which did wonders for making me strike all of the keys at the same pressure (lest you get faint z's and x's and dark g's and h's) - the only downside being that folks can hear me all the way in Australia (admittedly on the speakerphone) as I try to hold a teleconference and write my long overdue reports...

The other thing I do which to some may sound like an ostentatious luxury is that I have a sports masseur visit each week for a chair massage. After managing to pop both shoulders over the past 4 years, the massage visits have lessened the need to get cortisone injections every three months just so I can play tennis and golf...

TYPING

I find barbel curls helpful.

Also keeping the keyboard lower helps a lot. I type on a mobile laptop during the day and answer e-mails all night and used to have the same trouble until I just put the keyboard on my lap as I type, no more sore wrists. It's really not natural to look like a begging dog when you type, unless you're into that stuff.

The key here is that you need to keep your wrist straight, having it bent while typing can be repetitive and cause carpel tunnel syndrome. Just make sure to keep your wrists straight when you type and that will help you avoid problems greatly.

I agree with YogsVR4. Those speech-to-type programs are pretty good, it just takes time to get used to it

My wrist is jacked up, too. I just ignore it and keep typing...

Is that like the microphone thing where you speak into it and it types what you say???

I peck to pretty much and I've never had problems???

Cracking your knuckles though does led to artheritis. (spelling?)

You're still a little young to get carpal tunnel symptoms...

carpal tunnel sucks hardcore.

I wear braces everynight so that I can wake up and put a diferent brace on so I can cope with work all day.

and I'm only 22 and have carpal tunnel, age isn't a realy big factor unfortunately.
