Acceleration problems w/ 2001 Grand Prix
Hello,
2001 Grand Prix, 80,000 miles. The car has lost a significant amount of acceleration in the last month. In order to get the gear to shift, say from 2nd to 3rd, you almost have to floor it. It is also hard going from 3rd to 4th. Tact is going a lot higher than normal, but not beyond 5. I just can't seem to get any accceleration. It got a lot worse since I replaced a dead battery two days ago. Also had some electrical work done on an AC blower recently, but probably not related to the current problem. I am going to have a GM dealer replace the catalytic converter, as they sent out a letter some time ago saying they would do it for free due to a defect. Any other thoughts? Any help appreciated. nate |

Re: Acceleration problems w/ 2001 Grand Prix
Go for the CAT convertor since you qualify.

What other things have you done to date or parts replaced? How about the basics like a tune up?

Re: Acceleration problems w/ 2001 Grand Prix
TY for replying so quickly bnaylor, however, after speaking w/my husband he said that this is the least of our worries at the moment and we are not losing as much acceleration as what I originally thought.
I am going to start a new thread for the problem that we are having...which is OVERHEATING. Hubby thinks that the reason we are losing acceleration may be due to the car running hotter than it should. The name of my thread will be "2001 GP overheating" it would be awesome if you could look at that one for us I will post the info about the car in that thread...thx again Renee |

Re: Acceleration problems w/ 2001 Grand Prix
Thanks for those who have replied. I just wanted to let you know I had the CAT replaced by the dealer and that fixed the problem. In case some owners were unaware, GM sent out a bulletin last September that extended the warranty on the CAT to 10 years or 100,000 miles. When I took it in last week, the diagnostic and replacement was completely free.

I have a 2003 pontiac grand prix with 3800 engine, 80K miles having acceleration problems. I have replaced the fuel filter for the first time and added injector cleaner to the gas. It helped a little, but didn't solve the problem. It seems worse in warmer weather. Problem is sometimes I won't get a down shift when I need one. Another problem is when I get the down shift, the RPM goes up, but I get no power. What do you think the root cause is?
