1990 Jetta 4000 rpms at 70 mph

I have owned this jetta for 5 years and when I purchased it the instrument cluster did not work so I never noticed the unusual high rpms while cruising at 70. Recently I replaced the instrument cluster and noticed that when I was crusing at 70 I was at 4k rpms. I am pretty sure the tach is correct because it idles at the correct rpm. I am planning to go on a long trip (4000 miles) and I am trying to get everything ready and this is the last major problem I still have to address. any suggestions would be apperciated.

I know how you feel. Fortunately for me the wind noise is so great at that speed that I don't notice the engine whinning. The car was built when all the speed limits were still 55 and geared so that it would get the best fuel efficiency at that speed. I won't make a long road trip in mine. If necessary, keep an eye on your temperature and oil level. Change your oil before and after the trip.
You could also try taking highways instead of the interstate.

If it is a five speed, you can install a taller fifth gear . If its an auto, im beat.

I dont understand? Whats the problem with the engine turning 4000 rpm? Its not a long stroke big block engine after all. I have a 90 Jetta also, automatic, and dont plan to mess with the gearing.
