Timing marks? on 1.9 liter
Help, I aligned the little point in the camshaft sproket with the dimple in the head.
The crankshaft has the keyway The timing belt sprocket has a raised tab on it. The block has a notch. The crankshaft dampener/acc belt pully has a notch in it. The tab on the timing belt sprocket looks to be aligned with the keyway on the crank. If I align the tab on the the timing belt sproket with the notch on the block and then slide the dampener over it, the notch on the crankshaft pully/dampener is counter clockwise a few degrees from the mark on the block. My question is, am I supposed to line up the tab on the timing belt sprocket and keyway with the notch on the block or am I supposed to use the notch on the crankshaft dampener as a reference mark and align that up with the mark on the block? In chiltons it looks like they say to line up the keyway with the notch on the block? Last edited by rogersdodgers; 07-15-2006 at 06:18 PM. |

Re: Timing marks? on 1.9 liter
I aligned up the mark on the timing belt sprocket, put the dampener on and the notch on the dampener was about one sprocket tooth counter clockwise from the block mark, then I put the belt on and it started.
Seems to run smoothly, but there is some hesitation when I hit the throttle from idle. If the belt was off one notch would it run rough, or how would I know? Last edited by rogersdodgers; 07-15-2006 at 09:37 PM. |

Re: Timing marks? on 1.9 liter
Is it possible to verify timing with a timing light?
I am not sure if the belt is off a tooth or not, when it's running it seems to do well, but if I leave it in park and hit the gas it bogs for a sec before revving up Another question, can someone explain the reason for the mark being different on the crankshaft dampener? I can't figure it out. Last edited by rogersdodgers; 07-16-2006 at 11:35 AM. |

Re: Timing marks? on 1.9 liter
I recalled seeing something similar. Actually I believe when I did it, I had a white paint mark on damper, and I think a notch on the crank timing pulley? Like you had mentioned I believe they were a few degrees off. When I put it back on I just lined it up exactly the same way as when I took it off. Unfortunately I don't recall exactly how that was. Sorry.
If I was to guess, I think I lined up the mark on the crank timing gear, and left the mark on the dampener off a few degrees. But like I said I'm not 100% certain. |

Re: Timing marks? on 1.9 liter
If I remember correctly, it is the ninth tooth to the left of the gap that is supposed to align with the crank sensor. That is an easy check without a timing light.
