which tranny to use?

i have an 82 el camino and im swapping both the engine and tranny on. im dropping in a 350 and th350. my question is regarding the tail housing on the tranny, what legnth should i be using. also some suggestions on what type of carb is recommended. the engine has a larger cam, flat top pistons, and upgraded rockers in it. any comments would be welcomed. THANKS!

Re: which tranny to use?

depends on how much CFM your motor flows to fit the best carb, as far as the tailshaft housing I believe you need a the long one, unless you get a short one and see how much longer or shorter of a driveshaft you need. Might as well put a safety loop while you are under it.

Re: which tranny to use?

If the car didn't have a th350 or th400 to begin with you might have to use a different cross member as well. I would recommend a 700-r4 for street or 200-4r if you plan on racing. they are both 4-speed automatics, and i have seen grand nationals pull wheel stands with 200-4rs.

as for the carb it depends on application and the cfm you need. the cfm depends on the rpm range you plan on running, to high of a cfm and your motor wont get the right mix, to low and it will suffocate.

I'm also concerned about what you meant by "larger" cam and "upgraded" rockers. If the new cam has higher lift and/or stays open longer you should probably put stronger valve springs on. if you don't when you start revving to higher rpms you might start hearing a ticking or pinging sound especially if you are using rockers with a 1.6 ratio instead of the stock 1.5. that sound would be the pistons slapping the valves, the next step is throwing a rod.
