Clicking, anyone???

1999 Grand am SE 4 door, 4 cylinder. about 80,000 mi.

It has done a weird thing for quite some time now where I can be driving down the road and it will make a sparatic clicking noise (the exact noise that it makes when your turn signal or hazard lights are on, only twice as fast). It is really annoying. Any ideas?

2 other problems:

when trying to adjust radio volume, it will go up or down, usually not what I want it to do.


When driving down the road (dry pavement, no turns) sometimes the traction control light will come on and the engine will cut out/lose power for just a second...the ABS light typically comes on at the same time too.

I also got a 99 Grand AM, and had the same problem with my car....

1. Turn signal switch needs to be fixed or replaced. My car is doing the samething, but the dealer wants too much to fix it (and im not fixing it myself because I might blow the air bag.) So im living with the annoying clicking for now.

2.Stock radio sucks anyway. My radio also did this. The simple solution to this is just to simply buy an aftermarket head unit.

3.I had this problem also, but only when making right turns. One or both of the wheel/speed sensors are going bad. I ended up replacing both hubs, (of course, I didn't even attempt to do this myself) and haven't had the problem since then.

Radio volume...... that's very common to the Delco radios; thousands of them have a bad electronic volume control. The factory radio in my 2000 GT1 also had that damn problem. Luckily, my dealership ordered me a new one from Delco/Delphi. The newer ones have a better volume control in it. Use caution if you look for a replacement factory radio on E-bay. There are tons of them there, and there are also tons of them with volume troubles too. Make sure the seller specifically states that it is 100% guaranteed. Although some will state anything for a quick sale.....
I wanted a new factory unit because I like the steering wheel radio controls, and I didn't want to loose them with an aftermarket radio. Plus, I am keeping my car all Pontiac stock. At my age, all my modding went away back in the '70's, lol...... I'm too old for that stuff now !!!

Clicking ........ I think there was a recall about that. I am almost positive that I read that G.M. issued a recall, and Pontiac dealerships were replacing that control. Thet were replacing either the switch lever, or that part that is up in that "traction control" switch. Maybe somebody can chime in here and confirm that...

On the clickin, I had same problem, and its fixable. There was a post (search for it)on this site that describes disassembly of switch, wipe excess grease off contacts (as they have become contaminated), and reassemble. Voila! no more irritating clicks. As for the recall, its in regards to a faulty hazard switch that causes the turn signals not to work, intermittantly. I have had this problem, that was repaired by GM.

I had the same problem with mine I was told about the cleaning of the contact, but I never felt like getting into it so I decided to just live with it. That was about 3 Months ago, now it's seemed to of fixed/cleaned it's self.

Same here, I've been living with this clicking/ticking noise for about 6 months, I tell people it's my time bomb , but not to reiterate what others have said about the ticking I've heard the same; as for the radio, I've had mine replaced 4 times and it still does it. Last time I had them check they said it was an internal problem with the radio and a new one would cost around $400, dealer said "you can get a better one aftermarket".

This recall was for the 2000, but its probable that 99+ can do this too.

Factory delco radios do suck.

Hey Tommy, you can get a harrness for those steering wheel controls that let it work with aftermarket radios. Granted it cost about as much as a new aftermarket Radio/CD player !

i have a 2000 grand am and it does the same thing. my problem solver, two twelves in the trunk. haven't heard it since.
