Inop. Power Mirror Function

Hi Guys,

It's been awhile. I was wondering if anyone has tried to repair remote outside mirrors? I replaced my drivers side power mirror a year ago and today I'm going through the car was and I noticed while going through the dryer the glass is moving in and out. After I pulled out I tried to move it with the switch and nothing. I can hear the motor running but the glass won't move. It goes up and down with the switch fine but no in and out. I can move it easily by hand and of course it won't stay put while driving. I know they aren't that expensive but was wondering whether anyone has ever had one apart? How do you get the glass off?

When I bought my truck I had the same problem. I fixed it quite by accident by holding the mirror in place and pressing the mirror control left or right until it clicked and engaged and it's been fine ever since. I've never had one apart but I'm guessing the gear that turns the mirror lost some teeth so I just had to skip it over to a complete section of the gear.

Push the mirror portion to the right so it catches the gear again.

Common on Blazers - dirt/deposits on the switch contacts so toggle the button both directions 5-10 times with some sharp taps and probably will begin working again.

Tried this....the glass goes all the way in both directions when pushed by hand and running the motor while doing that hasn't worked. I'm thinking the gear broke. I have a new one coming for 25.00 off Ebay. But the last one only lasted a year. I'm thinking of trying to fix the old one and keep it for when the new one breaks. (Year?) Anyone know how to get inside these things?

I don't actually have a fix for you, but I have recently had a mirror apart (replaced a busted one on my '98 Jimmy, and thought I'd see how it works) and thought I would share the workings. Perhaps it will help. You can get into the mirror by simply pulling the glass off. However, I have heard that sometimes the pieces holding the glass in can break. So... at your own risk. Inside there are two motor assemblies. One verticle and one lateral. Each assembly works exaclty the same, just positioned differently. Within an assembly, is a motor on a parallel axis with mirror. The motor has a screw gear (plastic) coming off of it. The screw gear engages a floating gear (plastic). This gear is kind of a ball shape with teeth around the middle. There is a threaded hole through the center of this gear, perpendicular to the mirror, which engages a screw-type element on the mirror itself. The motor turns the screw gear, which turns the "ball" gear, which moves the mirror "screw" in or out, depending on the direction the motor is turning. Unfortunately you really can't get into the motor assemblies. The motor assemblies are in a bracket that is not meant to come out. Perhaps with a great deal of patience and some ingenuity, you could get into them and correct your problem. However, you are more likely to damage the mirror. To fix the problem, you will most likely have to replace the mirror. But if you commit to buying a new one, then trying to fix the broken one may be worth a shot. Good luck.

if all the above doenst work you can pick up a new switch from LMC real cheap. Thats what I did.

The switches work. Both motors run.
