Re: 1996 accord idling rough please help!
I also have the 96 lx. I bought my car with 94k on it, it now has 219k. I was told when I bought the car that the timing belt was just replaced. I didnt change the timing until 217k (Would not recomend) I think they recomend changing it at about 90k. When I got it done the Tech told me that balancing belt was just sitting inside the belt the plastic cover. He replaced it for me and told me that the engine would run a lot smoother, he wasnt kiding. usually you could feel the engine vibrating through the steering wheel, now its smooth. Check the spark plugs and wires and distributer.

If I had to take a wild guess, I'd think maybe something like your fuel pressure regulator was allowing pressure to bleed out of the fuel rail when the car sits for an extended time, then it starts up with a poorly charged rail and the injectors spitting air until the pump catches up...what happens if you turn the key to the "on" (not start) position and let it sit for maybe 15 seconds or so before starting the motor? Give it a try, that would allow the fuel pump to re-pressurize the rail and purge any air from the injectors...if the car then starts and runs fine each time you try this, I may be on the right track...also the fuel pump should come on and run just long enough to assure the system is pressurized whenever you first turn the key on...you can hear it as a faint hum from the rear of the car for a second or two after the key is turned to "on"...there may be a cold start relay or something like that not working right too.... Hondas aren't my main thing, so I don't know if there might be something very common that causes this on your model...someone here may have better ideas...Toyota uses (or used) a cold start injector in the intake to richen the cold mixture and make starting and warming up run better...they'd act like this when the timer or relay for that injector went out...maybe there's something similar here? I dunno... I bet a reading with a fuel pressure gauge after letting the car sit for a couple of days would tell you *(or your mechanic)* something useful...that's the place to start, IMO.
