Rear Speakers
Hello, a friend of mine recently purchased a pair of after-market 6X9" component speakers for his sunfire coupe, (year is unknown to me at the current moment). Upon assisting him with the install, the project was immediately put to a stop when neither of us could figure out how to remove the top particle board layer of the deck to remove the stock speakers. From the looks of the situation, the entire rear side panels, along with front seat belts, rear behind-seat trimming, and possibly the entire rear seats would need to be removed to take this top deck layer off. I'm wondering if there is a much easier way of doing this that i have overlooked, or if i do indeed need to slaughter this entire car to get at the rear speakers. If someone could please offer their assistance i would be very grateful. -thank you.

Re: Rear Speakers
nope you were right, everything needs to come out. and then you may have to cut the steel for the speakers to sit low enough or in the holes at all.

Re: Rear Speakers
Any REAL speaker will have to cut the rear deck to make it fit... my Infinity's I couldnt get low enough to put the rear deck back on without cutting 1/2" around the stock hole.
I've done this a few times, I know how to do it, and basically you do remove the rear sides, unless you like bending your interior pieces so they can possibly get stress marks in them. You dont HAVE to, but I would recommend it for a safer install. I did my first install with the bend technique, like you, but I found it easier/safer to just remove the panels, route your wires for any power/signal to amps (if you have them), and add sound deadener at the same time. It's all preference, not a right way or a wrong way to do it, just one is more "professional" than the other.

Re: Rear Speakers
Yeah that is true it is pretty easy to break them. But it is not difficult to do with leaving no stress marks or anything to get those pieces out it is all in knowing how. What model are your speakers? Mine are not great but not bad, they just have a shallow mounting depth. I had the Monsoon system stock which has pretty beefy stock 6x9's so there may also be some extra room there.
A quick word of advice for you people doing a lower budget system like I did, just get decent 6x9's for the rear and spend your money on the front speakers and get some good round 5 1/4" speakers if you can. The rear speakers are not nearly as important as the front. |

Re: Rear Speakers
The Kappa 6x9 2-ways, the magnets are almost 6" around and 1.5-2" thick.
I got a complete Infinity system, with the Infinity Perfect 12DVQ (their flagship sub). I went with the 4x6plates in the doors for ease of installation and overall sound quality over 4x6 speakers. I used JBL Amps, and a JVC head unit. Overall I'm pushing like 2400 watts max. 1200 to the sub (rated at 1600 IIRC) and 1200 to the mids and highs (that's for all the mids and highs together)

Re: Rear Speakers
Sounds like a nice system. I've always thought of JBLs stuff to sound a little on the sketchier side, however its nice to see people who dont consider a "sound system" to be a pair of blown out stock speakers in the doors, shitty maxed out stock 6X9s on the deck a cheep low end head and a poor quality but loud sub out there if you follow. i'll take a look at my buddys car again and we'll figure out if the speaker'll fit. trimming out the metal wouldn't be too big of a problem for me. thanks for the help.

Re: Rear Speakers
It's not too bad a sound from the JBL Amps, I've heard better and worse. I'll upgrade when the need arises.
