Transmission Filter

I know the topic of fluid changes has come up often and I am about to change mt transmission fluid and filter once again.

One question though:

What is the easiest wat to remove the nylon insert that does not easily come off with the filter. This nylon "washer" fits around the top tube of the filter within the bore of the transmission. I have heard of people suggesting that it is to be carefully pryed off. How is this done? I don't want to scratch the alluminum but I remember the last time having a very difficult time removing it.

Is there a danger in simply not replacing it?

DRW1000, what I did was:

Got cheap needle nose pliers. Bent points outward. Sharpened points slightly. When you open handles, it applies outward force to ring. You can rotate ring slightly and pull downward. If I recall, that sleeve is Nylon-Aluminum-Nylon sandwich.

I take the ring off the new filter ... and reuse the ring that is stuck in tranny body.

I removed the ring from the tranny body the first go-round, but after that I figure "why bother"!

I asked the techs at Kennedy Transmission about this. They just used a very large flat head screwdriver and pried it out. Just as long as the bore isn't scuffed you're OK. I'm still scared to try that method. I just use the needle nose pliers method.

Like 12Ounce, I too reuse the ring from the old filter.

On another note...take a look in the owners manual for recomended trannie filter change. They don't...... They have fluid changes but without filter changes.

I pryed mine off......use something to bend a spot in.....and grab that spot with a pair of needle nose pliers. I have detailed pictures of this in the pictures that the link in my signature will take you to.
