1998 z71 wiper problems

recently my wipers started not working itermittantly, when i turn the switch i hear noise noise coming from the dash area (kind of a rough buzzing soud) but no wiper movement. the water wont come out at this time either. if the truck sits for a while they magically start working again. any ideas.

thanks in advance

You can re-solder the connection where the plug connects on the circuit board or buy a new one for about $40. Recall stopped at 97. Same part in our 98's.

If you do not want to fool with fixing your old one.
Go to your dealer and get a new wiper board for the wipers.
Some were even under recall have your dealer run your vin no.
Open it up and read the instructions or look at the pictures.
There is a plastic cover on frontof your wiper motor that has a couple of screws holding it on.
Un plug the wiper wirring at motor Remove plastic cover and pull out old pulse board and plug in the new one.
Just like un plug and plag and play on a pc.
Good luck

I also had this common prob.
I took out circuit board and put some fresh solder
on the 2 main connections and fixed.
I did some research online and found good pics
& instructions - can't remember exactly where.

I had the same problem, though I could never find the diag of which joints to put the iron to, so I just hit about every joint with the iron and the problem was fixed, most auto parts stores as well as the dealer sell new boards though.

I have fixed about 11 of these, one of them being last night. You need a torx head screwdriver (I think a t15 or t20) and a soldering iron. Under the hood, unplug the only plug going into the wiper motor and unscrew the one screw in the middle of the cover and the two on the outside of the cover. The board will pull out easily with a little gentle rocking (of the board, not the truck). the only joints I ever solder are the five that are connected to the black piece of plastic that the main plug goes into. The one on the edge is usually the culprit, you can see a cold and broken solder joint around it most of the time. Touch with the iron to reheat solder joint. Plug in board, screw the 3 screws, you're done. It takes me less than 10 minutes to fix, and I am NOT a mechanical or electrical genius.

Good luck
Tony
