Unhappy 96 Grand Am SE -- ETS OFF & ABS lights

I just bought a '96 Grand Am SE *two days ago* and today the ETS OFF light came on. The ABS light was on when I bought it, but that didn't bother me because I *hate* anti-lock brakes, and the previous owner said he'd been driving it without ABS for over a year. (I should have known better; I should have thought, "Hmm...one thing is busted, other things will probably bust too.) The car seems to be driving fine, though -- no odd sounds, smells, or anything like that.

Do I need to have this checked out a.s.a.p., or is it OK to let it go for a while as long as the car is driving fine? I was planning to drive it on a long trip this weekend, but maybe that's not advisable?

Help! I know NOTHING about cars!

Re: 96 Grand Am SE -- ETS OFF & ABS lights

Welcome to AF!!

You should get it checked but if the ABS doesn't work anyway then I doubt it will be an issue. The issue is that you probably have a sensor, going bad in one of the wheels or even possibly a wheel bearing. This is very common and is usually the first sign of a problem. You may soon start to hear noise from one of the wheel bearings and if that happens you will need to make the repairs.
