Engine turns but doesn't start

Engine quit while I was slowing for a traffic light.
No error codes
Starter turns engine but the engine does not start. I get spark, I pushed the shrader valve in on the intake manifold and fuel spurted out and then slowly came out so I assume I am getting fuel?
I took a quick look at the timing belt and it is not broken and seems to be ok.

What do I look for now?

It's a 91' 1.9 liter

Thanks

Re: Engine turns but doesn't start

As long as the key is on, you should get 30 - 45 psi of fuel ... that's a lot of fuel!

Timing belt looks good? Are the timing marks still lined up and does the crank and camshaft turn when you are trying to start the motor? I had a timing belt loose a few teeth and didn't notice the problem until I tried to turn the motor.

Re: Engine turns but doesn't start

I too am curious how well you investigated the timing belt.

If you peeked in at the top it may appear fine, but could just be hanging there. The crank may be turning but not the cam... check it again and make sure everything is doing what you are supposed to. Easy way is to take off the valve cover or shine a light in through the hole... just verify valves are moving.... timing could still be off though.

Not sure why it would suddenly go out... but another culprit could be the crank sensor... it would cause these symptoms if it is on the blink.

Re: Engine turns but doesn't start

Looks like it is the timing belt, I opened up the plastic cover as well as I could and marked the camshaft pulley with white pencil. The mark I made didn't move.
Looks like a pia, doesn't look like I can get the plastic cover off without pulling the belt tensioner pully and dropping the bracket for the alt. and pwr steering. Who designs these things If it wasn't for that it doesn't look too hard.
What ever happened to noisey but reliable gears lol I miss the cars I had in the early 70's
those two studs that hold the cover in place don't come out do they?

A sadist!

The studs will come out if you double-nut them. I think most folks run without the plastic cover once they ever get it off.

Re: Engine turns but doesn't start

You are "supposed" to remove the engine mount that is right there... that clears the way for the plastic cover to come out.
I modified mine while I had it off... I clipped on of the bottom pieces that bends around and rivited on a rubber flap. This way it slides right off without removing anything.

Re: Engine turns but doesn't start

The 1991 1.9 liter is listed in gates timing belt guide as an interference motor.
I hope it isn't trashed but I guess there is no way to know unless you put a new one on?

Re: Engine turns but doesn't start

It is a non-interference engine.

Re: Engine turns but doesn't start

whew thanks
I had some awful visions of having to pull the engine out.....
Another site mentions if the engine code is J it is non-interference and mine is a j.
Designing an engine to self destruct is insane, IMO
