Help: '98 GTP Sunroof Problems

A few years ago my sunroof stopped opening all the way and after pushing the button again, it would open the rest of the way and then slide back. Then, about two weeks ago it started making clicking noises when opening and especially when closing. Finally this weekend, I hit the button and nothing happened. I at first though the motor died but have noticed that when I hit the button I hear a noise like the motor is running, just nothing is happening. I haven't tried manually assisting the sunroof because I don't have a garage and am worried about it getting stuck open. I've looked through some other forums and have read about misalignment, dirty tracks, or motors dying. I am wondering which direction my symptoms are pushing and how hard it would be to remove the headliner if the motor is indeed dead? I've read that the motor is an easy fix, but removing the headliner can be a difficult task. Also, my car has about 135,000 miles on it but 70-80% are highway with the sunroof not being used.

Re: Help: '98 GTP Sunroof Problems

There are many causes but it sounds like you need some track maintenance. Purchase a door panel removal tool and use it to remove the headliner. You will need to remove a host of interior panels first so that the headliner comes out. The removal tool will make it very easy to remove. Once you access the motor and the sunroof, check everything first before removing anything. It could be as simple as a loose connection. If not then start with lubing the tracks then try it again. If everything leads to the motor you should be able to get to it very easily. Also don't forget to try another 12 volt source. You may have a bad wire from the switch or the car to the switch. Once you have completed your repair simply reinstall the headliner and everything else.
