replacing the shaft that goes in the trans to the transfer case?

ok so im in the process of replacing the output shaft for the trans to the transfer case but ran into a bit of a problem when i went to get the case off the back of the trans to pull out the shaft it pulled out so far and stoped then me and my buddy noticed that there was something white that looked plastic maybe some kind of connector or something like a guide? any ideas and what do i do to get it off?
