GTP engine into Grand Am

I know it's possible (I'd never be able to figure out how to do it myself), but I don't know everything I'd need to replace if I did something like this. If I were to get a Grand Prix GTP engine for my 1999 Grand AM SE 3.4L V6, somehow, what all would absolutely need to replace? And what kind of costs are we looking at here?

I'm a noob to car upgrades, I mainly just deal with audio. Someone help a poor noob out

Well you need the wiring harness (and most of the sensors) the GTP Pcm...

You'd hav to fab the mounts, both motor and trans. Make new Halfshafts, because the GTPs are to long, and the splines are diff,(I'm pretty sure) wheel sensors/hubs.

Damn ! Good luck changing the plugs
Might get lucky and some wires/plug would be the same, or easy to change.

THe easy way is to run a SIM, that just tricks the GA into thinking the GTP stuff is GA, and vise versa.
I've seen it done(on tv) with a few different cars/shows.

So youre looking at spending alot of time and $$$$.
You would be better off buying a GTP w/V8

and Welcome to AF Vipey1337 !

Re: GTP engine into Grand Am

it was mainly hypothetical... I, like all other college students, don't have any money It was just a possible future plan. If it would be THAT hard to do, I should just, like you said, spend $$$ on a GTP (got to drive one once and that was fun), or just get the car I've been meaning to get (Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4) for the instant G's. All I really care about is hitting the gas and it moving (like everyone else!).

Maybe I'll just keep my grand am as my audio vehicle and be boring and save money

Thanks for the welcome, though. If anyone knows a good place to get a cold air intake (assuming it will help acceleration noticeably from stock... does it btw?) for cheap, lemme know

interesting name lol '1337' =D

http://www.doctorspeed.com <-- Use caution =p .. if the cold air intake is out of stock... dont bother =p

You're probly better off with a cold air intake off of e-bay for your grand am...

From the doctorspeed guy I waited about a month before I got mine... It is very nice though dont get me wrong =p .. sorta pricey too but I already ordered it back when I didnt care much about ebay =p

As for gains with the cold air? Dunno..... I replaced the PCM in mine and felt WAAY more difference... then I placed the cold air intake in and it just better'd *if thats a word* the situation...

If you hav the knowledge, time and money, anything is possible. I'm sure its been done by someone out there, or a simular swap.
I just wished our GA V6s could get a 5-6spd manual, that would be fun !

As Gir said, Dr speed has some real nice CAI, but the wait is rediculas at this time.
I bought one on Ebay for around $80, 3 piece(w/barbq sause) from ChromeIntakes. Its pretty much the same as Dr speeds or any other CAI out there, cant beat the price :

And Yes it will get More air flow w/CAI more low end torque too.

Thanks for pointing me towards EBAY... I'll probably do that then. I'd like to save a bit of money if I can help it. I was originally going to get one from doctorspeed, but if they're out of stock i'll probably not want to wait that long...

These forums are cool, nobody makes fun of noobs

What's another way I could upgrade my lateral g's without spending shitloads of $$$? Thanks for all the responses so far guys!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/99-00...06003931QQrdZ1

This is the more expensive of all the CAI's. Why is this one more expensive than the others?

This includes everything I need, I hope. I'm going to order it tonight if this is what you recommend

And do strut bars really make enough difference for me to spend my hard-earned, small income on? :P

Re: GTP engine into Grand Am

that CAI you posted has a K&N air filter, I got the one with some cheapo filter thats still laying in the garage.
I all ready had a K&N RX 4990 that screams
But this ones a nice piece , just follow their directions, and if you want a certain color request it up front and they'll most likly hook you up.

If you do alot of driving the tower braces are great, especially on curvy roads .
It tightens up the suspension so cornering is more precise , which should make parts/tires last longer, wear less.
...I could just be an aggressive driver

Re: GTP engine into Grand Am

I hate paypal.

End of story.

But yeah I got it ordered... I think... after having the hardest time in the history of the planet trying to get the thing billed correctly. Apparently paypal doesnt recognize the city that Purdue University is in, so I can't have it billed to my apartment. Which complicates things like crazy. I find it hard to believe West Lafayette doesnt exist, being as it harbors a big 10 school...

So yeah, HOPEFULLY if everything worked out, I ordered a cold air intake from ChromeIntakes on ebay, and it will get to me with as few flaws as possible. I don't order on ebay much so i'm praying I did everything properly.

And now it's 1:30 because it took two hours to get this god damned thing ordered. I'm really, really hoping this was worth the major lack of sleep...

Re: GTP engine into Grand Am

Haha ! Ya I hate Paypal too, even though I've never used it.

I know W. Lafayette ! You should hav just put Lafayette, think it should recognise that. I went to PU years ago. I live way North of there now .

Hopfuly you'll get your order, with out many more hurdles.
As long as you gave them your car info, everything should be kool !

Sadly stuff for the Grand AMs these days are + bag of ruffled chips

Umm, what would you be looking for as goes for more lateral g's?

I want to direct you in the way of possibly getting a DHP PCM ($200-ish, Get $100 of it back after you send in your old one) so really ur just spending $100 + shipping ... dunno why they just call it rebate... or does it work differently I dunno

pfyc.com
And please check out our performance thread sticky'd in the Grand AM forum

Re: GTP engine into Grand Am

sooo... would that PCM make a very noticeable difference? It looks like it causes more stress on my transmission too... I mean my transmission is running fine but my car's been 168,000 miles...

If it noticeably improves performance without destroying old parts in my car, I'll probably do it. How do you know it worked, btw? Also, I doubt I could afford premium fuel :P

And nice to see a purdue alum

Re: GTP engine into Grand Am

Ya the DHP PCM works better with the more Mods you hav. Like a CAI & headers/Ehaust,maybe port polished intakes, 63mm TB.

Not cheap any way you look at it. I think if they still made GAs, parts would be cheaper and more available.
But thats how it goes $$$$--
