just no other way to say it...

My car is just slow. I'm not complaining too much, its my daily driver and hasn't given me any problems in awhile. so she's running strong but...it's a camaro. i didnt just buy the thing for the looks, i bought it because its got a 350 and its supposed to fast!! anyway..i imagine its my fuel pressure thats holding her back a bit. when i slam on the acceleration i get some fumes and stuff in the cab. just looking for any suggestions i guess. should i replace my injectors/fuel pressure regulator/etc.? something to get her running the way a 350 5.7 is supposed to run. mods..sorry if this is in the wrong place now, feel free to move if necessary. thanks guys..

Re: just no other way to say it...

If you're talking off the line quickness, throw some 4.11's or 4.56's in it. 3.55's or lower really slow things down, but give you great top end... my rationelle, who in the hell is going to be doing 160 mph on a regular basis? Give me the umphf where I want it.

Headers into a full 3" exhaust dumped just behind the mufflers, as far as the injectors and stuff wait until John or Curtis drop by, they're better at that stuff.

Re: just no other way to say it...

right. i'm talking about off the line quickness. and thats just the way i think, maybe some people do, but i personally don't go flying around at over 100 mph everywhere i go. i want 'umpfh' when and wherever. i dont know about headers yet...4.11's sound good. thanks for the suggestion

Re: just no other way to say it...

Not a problem... 4.56's may be a bit much... actually a lot bit much. For a daily driver on 4.11's, you should probably have an overdrive trans. I top out at about 55-60 in 4th (1:1) ~3500 RPMs... no overdrive. If you have a .62 or so overdrive you'll still get 90 or so on the highway with out winding out the engine.

I think they run about $300 for the ring and pinion depending on what you get, and maybe $300-$500 to have installed. I've heard it's a doable thing if you have the right tools... which happen to cost... about $300-$500. (Bastard speed shops.)

Is this a TPI? and have you checked the fuel pressure?

Re: just no other way to say it...

Hell yeah, Jim.. thats what im talking about.. I hate how people say "My car can go up to 140-160!" but seriously.. how often do you go up there and seeing how dangerous it already is to go at 100, it really is stupid to point at top speed as an advantage.

Also maybe you got the same problem I do with it not being timed properly.. but im just throwing that as an out of the blue suggestion..

Re: just no other way to say it...

thanks for the suggestions. to answer your question, my timing is fixed. it was off about 5 degrees, but its perfect now. and yea, its tpi not carb. i havent checked my fuel pressure since i got the new pump installed. so its just more or less an assumption that my fuel pressure isnt where it should be. lol..an lt1 cam is a thought, sounds like a bit of work...

Re: just no other way to say it...

I would put a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel lead, pretty inexpensive diagnostic tool. Autometer makes a remote FP gauge that I am going to put in my dash whenever I get around to it.

Cams, intakes, proms, and the like I would think are more expensive than the ring and pinion, (especially considering you have to do a combination/series of mods to get any tangible benefit... what's an intake worth 20 HP at the most by itself?) and they will only handle the engine's performance. Unless your new cam and other mods are going to significantly raise the redline and torque I think the most cost effective mod to put some nuts under the pedal is a step or two up on the R&P. (edit: especially considering you don't want to go the full on "mod the shit out of your maro route"). You don't happen to know what is currently in it, do you?

Considering the volume and types of problems rearing their ugly damned heads as I go through my maro I wouldn't push my maro any higher than 80 or so for highway driving. Don't get me wrong, I've had it redlined in 4th when there's no one anywhere close to me on the bypass, but as far as distance driving, etc... I don't trust the damned thing to stay together in my driveway let alone on the highway. Case in point... I just finished rebuild the trans, somewhere along the line the wiring is all f'd up and I can't figure out where. While trying to figure out where the harness was bad, I jacked up my maro, and noticed the wheel weights laying on the floor. So not only have I just ordered a new wiring harness and will be rewiring the entire car over the next couple days, but I will also ne taking all the friggin wheels off to have them balanced with the clip on weights instead of the lousy tape on jobs.

I meant what rear ratio is in it?

Reliability is a huge issue, I'm with you on that. Just don't waste time/money replacing stock stuff that you're gonna 86 later.

Re: just no other way to say it...

I have owned quite a few TPI vettes and after a ton of research on them and despite what some say as no matter what you do never being able to break that 5k RPM breathing issue. Aftermarket shorter runners do make a nice improvement and even out the powerband nicely versus the peak low end torque and 4800 rpm drop off.
