Replaced Rear Wheel Cylinders, now Brake Warning Light On!
Hope someone can give me some tips here. I've just replaced the rear wheel cylinders, which were leaking. Was planning on replacing the shoes, but they seemed to be doing just fine, the OEM shoes were actually thicker than the replacements I bought, so I put them back on.
But I did replace both cylinders, and bled both of them. But now my Brake Warning light is on. The manual is useless for what this actually means, other than a problem with the braking system. My first guess is that this is likely because I've got a little air in the system still, and the system isn't seeing enough pressure, but does anyone have any other ideas on what this might be after working on the rear brakes? I gave it a spin around the block, and everything seemed fine. Brakes seemed to work just fine. I could stand a little stiffer pedal, but this pedal has always been spongy. Anyone have any ideas? Or do you think a repeat bleading might do the trick? I have a feeling there's a lot of air in that system the way they use hard lines in the back which means no clamping. I probably didn't bleed enough. Hell, after leaving that line open for a while, I might need to bleed the system all the way back ![]() D |

Re: Replaced Rear Wheel Cylinders, now Brake Warning Light On!
Haynes manual says red brake light on is either parking brake not released or low fluid level in master cyllinder. Air in brake lines might be causing fluid level to fluctuate in master cylinder reservoir and triggering the sensor.
We had both rear brake cylinders replaced under warranty. I passed on getting new shoes, they just left the old ones in after cleaning brake the fluid off and it now works fine. |

Yep. Was low level. That damn master cyclender is so far back it was hard to see, I topped it off and the light went out.
Pedal is still a bit spongy, I think there's some air in there, so I will rebleed (probably this weekend) the entire system. Earlier this year, I replaced the front calipers, and now the rear cylinders, so I'm sure bit by bit, it's just added up. I'll do the four wheel bleed and I'm sure things will be great. The Groaning we used to have from the old wheel cylinders keeping the shoes well lubed is gone at least! |
