SS/SC Vs. Srt-4

Coming home about 15 minutes before this thread was writen, I was behind a White Srt that happend to be leaving the same gated housing community that my friend's parents live in. We both happend to be turning left which made me think, "Oh yeah, this is on as soon as I get around this truck ahead of me". The Skittle makes his turn when the light go's green and I do a little shimmy around the truck to put the Skittle directly to my left. By the time I caught up to him we were both doing just a shade over 60, so this puts me in the very bottom of 3rd gear...not my cars strongest point.

So I creep passed him a bit trying to bait him and then he creeps back up on me. We jog back and forth a bit untill I just give the throttle two hard taps, this is all he needed I guess, because he just up and shot off like a mad hair. I follow in his pursuit and stop his pull for a moment, then I'm guessing he got through and turbo lag he was having and just starting running away and now I'm thinking "Shit, I've found myself a modded Srt and this is going to be over quick." But to my surprise, once he was out about a car ahead his pull completely haulted and now I'm gaining at about the pace that he was pulling on me. This is because he ran out of gear a bit quicker than I did and I still had a good amount of 3rd to use up.

By the time I pulled even with him I flicked the tranny into 4th and we just stood there even with eachother, moving back and forth a foot or two, but niether one gaining any real ground on the other. Then he started to fall back and didn't stop untill he was almost at my rear bumper, this caused me to think he was done with the run as we were only a qaurter mile from the next intersection and were doing well over 100 mph. So I let off the throttle for about 3 seconds, thinking it was over. Well, I was wrong and he was still at it. He pulled a nose on me before I could do anything about it, but he didn't get any further than that.

Once again I pulled him in and this time I put his nose at about my trunk and there he stayed untill I realized it was really time to shut down this race. That intersection came up real fast and was now a little less than a block away, so I hammered the breaks at about 125 and he shot passed me like I was standing still. We both took a right turn at the light and as he pulled into his neighboorhood I flash my high beams and gave him a wave as I drove by, I dunno if he noticed or not, but oh well.

I'm guessing this Srt was bone stock and the cause of his immidiate pull was the nasty tq those turbos produce. I'm sure he'll also be checking for boost leaks and trying to get rid of any boost creep he may have as well. I'm betting he didn't expect that outcome...I know I didn't.

Finally this race goes down, sweeet. Sounds like a fun race, the close ones are always the best.

Re: SS/SC Vs. Srt-4

Nice kill, im really impressed I figured the SRT-4 would have had you...

I don't know how either of your ratio's are setup but I would have figured the turbo would give the srt top end over you...but I guess I was wrong

anyways congrats on that kill, few people get it

Re: SS/SC Vs. Srt-4

Thanks guys.

I also figured I'd lose by about a length or so. But, for some reason the powerband on this little 2.0 is almost all top end power. It's got some decent tq down in the mid range, but it has nothing at all untill about 3,000 rpm. You can really feel it kick in right at the 3,200 mark. Then it's a nice steady pull all the way to redline.

It makes me sad I have to get rid of this car soon, I had so many plans for it.

Re: SS/SC Vs. Srt-4

nice one...you deffinatley have a factory freak....as a GM employee me and my co-worker took a couple out to the back and tested them out...we raced them against each other and then tryed it against my car......their pretty quick off line.....1st and 2nd gear it kept up against me but when I hit my third I just pulled and kept pulling until about 100mph then shut down....then we went from a 40 roll and it was a instant pull.....but it does sound like you have a strong car in your hands...so good kill

Considering Dodge canceled the Neon/SRT-4 line last year... that would explain it.

Next up is the Dodge Caliber SRT-4... We'll see how that does.

Re: SS/SC Vs. Srt-4

Bulldog had a point about why it may have been so close with him winning. Aren't the SRT-4's kind of notorious for boost leaks. That alone makes this story completely believable to me. And yes the top-end is extremely good on the SS/SC.

Re: SS/SC Vs. Srt-4

i call BS... how can a car alomost a full second slower in the 1/4 mile.. with, only basic mods win, especially sayin ur SC car got the Turbo top end.... hard to believe.... i have a st.2 SRT and i completely up and leave SS cobalts so i think a stock would at least get one by 2 cars or so... idk maybe he was a bad driver... anyways good kill bro... u never can tell..

There are a couple things you have to consider when testing the cars right off the lot. First, they need a good 3,000 miles of use to really be broken in to make full potential power. They are safe to beat up on right out of the box, but are still not as fast as they could be after a few thousand miles. The second and most important thing is, the fact that dealerships never put 91+ octane in the vehicle they recieve, they're just too damn cheap to do something smart like that. Everyone that owns one knows to stay away from any less than 91 if they want their car to perform at all, they really do feel weak with piss water in the tank.

Now I'm not saying these two variables would have completely changed your experiment with the Cobalts against your Srt, but I'm willing to bet the difference would have been noticeable.

As far as my car being a factory freak, I don't think it's all that faster than most out there. I just think most Cobalt drivers suck ass.

So what is it then? BS, or a good kill?
