OBD 11 Failed to link & Blown Fuse

1994 Olds 88 (OBD11 sticker under hood).
Autozone attempts to read code; "failed to link" appears on screen. Cigarette lighter fuse is blown. Replaced fuse, lighter works during several attempts then blows again. Any ideas? (Car stalls often, cold or hot.)
Thanks very much.......Bob

Re: OBD 11 Failed to link & Blown Fuse

There were a couple of years of overlap on the OBD systems. If I remember right, some OBD2 systems were fitted with an OBD1 plug. This may have caused your reader to not work and may have connected a couple pins that weren't supposed to be connected.

Re: OBD 11 Failed to link & Blown Fuse

Thanks for the reply, however, as the OBD 11 label is in the engine compartment, does that not necessarily mean that I have in fact OBD 11. The connector is 16 pin. What do you think? Thanks again, Bob

Ah...under the hood sticker. I didn't think of that when I wrote the last post. Hmm... I know this issue came up a while back in one of the forums. I'll try to find the link.

Find the cause of the blown fuse or no scanner will work, you need a " real" scanner to access the early obd11 cars, not Autozone.

Re: OBD 11 Failed to link & Blown Fuse

OK, fixed the fuse issue. Now if the Actron scanner from Autozone won't pull the codes, can you advise which one will? Thanks again. a

Actron 9145 should, Snap on mt 2500, and all highline professional scanners.
