Possible Overheating

Hi,
My wife told me the other day that our 1998 2.4 Auto was overheating. She said the temperature guage was over in the red while driving. At the time she was in a traffic jam. She also said the oil light would blink on and off. (I have not been able to confirm EXACTLY the light she saw). When she finally got it to open driving, it went back to where it normally is. This is the first time we have experienced this. The car has 110k on it. I thought it was the fan, but it seems to operate normally. I checked the oil and it seemed fine, and has plenty of coolant. it has had the water pump replaced before. I thought it might be the thermostat. i don't know if it was replaced at that time. I do know the fan runs with the ac on, but not sure otherise (she had the ac on at the time, but did turn it off, didn't seem to change anything)

Any ideas?

Thanks
