Where did the "Z" in Z24, Z26, and Z28 come from anyway?
Just thought of that for some reason.

The same place they got the 300zx, the 350z, and all those. From the Easter Bunny of course!

Re: Where did the "Z" come from???
Random production code used to denote a package. Chevy was trying to get into use on the Camaro for racing purpose. Problem was, Trans Am racing had a 305 cubic inch displacement limit. So, they wanted to make a nifty new motor on a nifty car to meet the requirements and "bend" the rules. So, they did. It was originally RPO Z27 (assigned to the SS and had been in use for a while). However, they couldn't come up with an agreeable name for the package option and finally gave up after they got the production lines for the car rolling w/o a name. So they basically said "screw it" and just used the package number...the Z/28 package.
The racing thing had its own issues, but the end story is that Chevy sold the Z/28 package hardcore. So, they made more and later wound up actually using badges that said Z/28. Thus, the new designation for performance packages on Chevy's was made (a shift from the SS designation). From there, Chevy was all like "sweet, every car needs a "Z" package. So, they all got them (more or less). It just means "it goes faster and handles better...and cost quite a bit more, too." And that's the story as told to me by people I know as well as my own online investigation. Feel free to correct me at will, b/c I probably got at least a few things wrong. Lances - Don't forget all the fun little Z's in the 30's, too. Those puppies can scoot along quite nicely in their own right.
