get the GenII version.. the metal tube gets hot and heats up the air and defeats the purpose. the GenII has the plastic tube and stays cooler.

I lost some of the cool sound, but the mileage boost and throttle response is still good. I'll get and Airaid tube or something when I have more $$$. I also saw a thread about cutting the muffling part off the stock air tube.....

Yes I have seen that.. it is fine if you do not want to spend any money. all you have to do is duct tape the hole and paint it black to match the tube. cheaper than buying a tube.

It is already a true cold air intake like forced cold air from the grille and fender area with a lage air filter already in it. Different engines react different to different mods. Sometimes they help on gas mileage and power and sometimes not. Chose it with care and stay with one that is a true cold forced air intake from grille or fender and not under hood. And remember the K&N has oil in it . Go easy on the oil and you will have to keep it service often and the maf sensor cleaned. Good luck MT

I have heard that the intakes don't really do much unless you have a good flowing exhaust. Is this true or would you really see a power increase with just the intake? Also, would just a catback exhaust like flowmaster for example help out or would you really need to go all the way with headers to get improvements?

Re: What is the best k&n set up out there ?
I already had the ehaust on my truck whenever i did it so i wouldn't know. And I have a cat-back flowmaster on mine with no headers and it made a descent amount of difference. But i am sure Headers wouldn't hurt if you wanted to put them on. The most difference I noticed with my intake was the pickup of gas-mileage.
