Depends on what year and what transmission. ALL transmissions will have problems with age and neglect/abuse, its only a matter of time. It seems to be the general feeling online that the taurus/sable twins have soft transmissions, and without the strictest upkeep and maintenance, they will have problems at some point in their lives. Its hard to tell if you are buying one used, especially an older higher mileage one, what type of maintenance was done to the tranny. If you are considering buying a sable, I would stay away from anything older than 2000 model year, and anything over 70K miles. Hope this helps.

P.S. also the Duratech 24V DOHC has a little stronger transmissions, and gobs more power and torque too :o)
