Hi everyone looking for advice on a 1984 mustang LX with the 6 cyl. engine?

Hi everyone,

I am looking at mustangs and stumbled across a 1984 mustang LX convertible.

It has the 6 cyl. 232 engine its an automatic and has 151,067 miles on it.

It seems to have a nice straight body and all in all a very clean interior, granted the front seats are worn but thats to be expected of a car of this age.

Little bit of surface rust under the doors but otherwise seems to be a good clean solid car.

Any advice on what to be aware of on this model and make of car?

PS the top looks almost new but just in case where would one go to find a replacement top or at least a price on 1? I am looking to do some basic mods to the powertrain but nothing overly major to the car. Cold air intake, header back exhaust system better ignition bigger radiator, and oil tranni cooler maybe upgrade the throttlebody and intake manifold down the road, beef up the suspension a little and maybe upgrade the head and tail lights.

No body kits! I may shave the door handles but don't know yet.

Anyway this is what I have in mind for the car if its worth it I like toe body style and you don't see many of them around anymore. I would keep this car forever or untill I die or it goes way beyond.

Just looking for any advice!

Thanks,

Joe

You have a pretty rare mustang. There was not too many 84's & 85's with that engine. That engine replaced the INLINE 6 cyclinder, and then was dropped all together and did not re-appear in the mustangs untill 1994 when the SN95 body style came back. They did stay in the T-birds as the T-bird sc with the supercharger on top. If anything you might want to talk to SCCOA http://www.sccoa.com/ because they actually have alot more in common with your perticular mustang due to the engine.

You can easily upgrade the power of your engine buy dropping in 99~04 heads and intake, but the computer you have is not setup for that. The easier route would be to install the Eaton blowers that the T-bird SC uses and go that route. I have done 2 of those conversions, one with a 94 V6 and a 97 V6 mustang. Both of them ended up putting down around 240+rwhp and 340+rwtq. I need to find the dyno's and put them online for you to look at.

Some of the stock T-bird SC's came with 210hp and 315tq at the crank, which was what some of the 5.0L mustangs was putting out. That was around 12psi with a compression of 8.2:1 . The two mustangs I assembled had a compression of 9.4:1 and the boost was set at 7~9psi with the pulley.

BTW the blowers came right off of a couple of wrecked T-bird SC's we found the the wrecking yard. Total cost for the engine blower setup---$350 per setup. You can't get any cheaper than that.

Thanks silverstangs,

I don't own the the car just yet but am very interested in it even more so now that I have the information you gave and I thank you very much for that as well as for the link.

The guy is asking about 1880 +/- for the car so overall with the history of the engine and the rareity of it I am now very interested in it.

Thank you,

Joe

I would just do a low milage split port swap.

If anything, I would pull a 4.2L shortblock from a F-150. Then get a cam and used blower... that all can be done for under $1200

That wouldent be a bad set up, I just dont like the idea of putting a blower on a horrible flowing engine, you can find M90 kits pretty cheap, its hard to find "complete kits" though.
