Exclamation BIG engine Trouble I Think 97 3.1 Lumi... HELP!!!

Ok.... a few days ago she started to run a lil rough..but only for a short time then cleared up and the (SES) light came on so over to autozone... P0305 Misfire on #5 Cyl... So I figure Plugs this weekend... NEVER GOT THAT FAR!!! I started her up this morning.. started good and the (SES) light had gone off so it reset... well 20 minutes into driving... all of a sudden she starts to lose power and the (SES) came on Again also the OIL light popped on and she started the Misfire chug again... stopped her and turned her off for a few minutes... I restarted her and the same MISFIRE chug and OIL light... so while I had her runnin' I put her in reverse and back her up a 'lil so the tow truck could get to her easier... and she DIES!!!Mind You THERE WAS NEVER A TICK OR KNOCK DURING THIS WHOLE TRAGEDY!! Well I try to start her again and NO Dice!!! Cranked about a 1/4 turn(like bumpin the engine) but NO further... Towed to a Trusted Shop and they pulled the front plugs and"soaked" the engine to "free it up" and Nothing... says I spun a bearing Well My regular shop said it could be something Called Hydro-Lock... but they couldnt look at it til next week(why I didnt take it there 1st) and Im a Courier who needs his car to Make$$$ So... what do You think People????? I really dont want her to go to the crusher!!! I need Help and Ideas...

Thanx to ALL that Reply!!!

Hydrolock is when the cylinders are so full of fluid (fuel, coolant) that the volume in the combustion chamber can't be compressed, so the motor is stuck there and can't turn anymore...I guess if you had an injector go totally insane and fill the cylinder it could do that...but a hydrolock on one cylinder usually leads to a twisted rod or broken wristpin or piston, whatever gives easiest to being wrenched by the other cylinders pushing against it....

I dunno. Be interesting to find out what it is...

so, now the motor turns over? run a compression check. Make sure the oil pump hasn't pumped its last.

The car wont crank by hand or anything and when the auto shop tried it they got metal on metal. The exact words are its not worth fixing the engine. So now with all the newer parts we want some of our money back.

T- ... Read the original post carefully... I made It ABUNDANTLY clear that the OIL light was on and that it was still runnin' at that time and there were no KNocks Or Ticks... The shop that looked at her said they hand cranked it and heard metal on metal So shes done... Just partin her out now (Or Whole car as is) so if you or anyone need parts... let me know... ALT is already gone

Thanks All,

MYX

Re: BIG engine Trouble I Think 97 3.1 Lumi... HELP!!!

Interesting...I only learned the other day how the computer senses misfire, I had always assumed it just sensed the discharge spike in the ground circuit, but I was wrong...it reads the slight crank decelleration through the CPS and notes which cylinder's power cycle occured just before that, and so is able to determine which one misfired....

So I suppose that if you had one dragging on a power stroke due to a bearing getting ready to seize or something, it could also read that bogging as a misfire also...it would be interesting (to me) to pull the bottom apart and see if it was correct as to which one screwed the pooch.

Re: BIG engine Trouble I Think 97 3.1 Lumi... HELP!!!

My husband actually wants to take the oil pan of to see which one it was. The misfire read on the number 5 but then cleared the code itself so we were stunned when the engine actually did what it did. Sad thing was when we were driving and lost power to the engine I looked at my husband in the face and said we just lost a cylinder or engine blew. Is it common tho when something like this happens that it feels like the engine looses all the power and when u put the pedal to the floor the engine sounds like its racing like crazy but u literally get no movement from the car? That is what has stumped us. When it happened it felt as if the belt came off but then the car died. If my husband does look today we will post what it was if we see anything. We hate to let the car go tho.

No...not really, unless it downshifted all the way to L1 and was racing because of that....but yes, you have to feed them more and more throttle as they start to sieze, if you are trying to maintain speed (which you shouldn't if the motor is dying...but I've run a couple into the ground just outta spite like that..)

Re: BIG engine Trouble I Think 97 3.1 Lumi... HELP!!!

If he wants to try something as a long shot, he could remove the torque convertor bolts and see if the motor turns free then...a self-destructed lock-up torque convertor that has fragged could keep the motor from turning over, and produce a metal to metal sensation when the crank is rotated...still doen't explain why it was reading a misfire...unless that was a red herring...and normally lock-ups give plenty of indication when they are going bad...

Actually, forget that...just thinking out loud...forgot you had low oil pressure leading up to the seizure...
