2000 Grand Prix fuel pump replacement.

Hello, recently my gp has had problems with its fuel pump. Its basicly screwed up somehow and its pretty easy to tell when someone turns the ignition on while you put your head close to your rear tire and listen for the fuel pump to turn on or whatever it does.... on my 97 GTP the theres no sign of anything wrong, and it sounds like any other electronic fuel pump.. but on my 2000, its really hard to describe, lets just say its not pretty. I know im gonna have to replace my fuel pump more than likely. So could anyone give me the instructions on how I should do that? Unless anyone else knows what the problem could be... Before it completely died... It acted as if it were running out of gas going down the road. Then it got to the point to where it would go dead at red lights due to letting it idle... If it idled too long it went dead... I could really use the help guys! Thank you for your time.

Re: 2000 Grand Prix fuel pump replacement.

Is your 2000 a GTP, SE or GT?

Thats called fuel pump prime. It does it for two seconds. Your 2000 should sound similar to your '97 GTP.

If you have access to an automotive fuel pressure tester, you can test fuel pressure at the Schrader valve on the fuel pressure regulator to see if it is in spec. That way you test fuel pump, lines, fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator.

These type problems are either ignition or fuel related. Another possibility if it is a spark problem would be the crank position sensor. But since the fuel pump doesn't sound right that would be the most likely culprit.

We have plenty of old posts on how to replace the fuel pump assembly.

BTW - Welcome to AF.

Thank you. My 2000 Grand Prix is a GT. Ive also heard that it could be my o2 sensor... I'll have to test it and see. Thanks for the help.

Just to add to Bob's suggestions, a partially clogged fuel filter can cause the pump to run louder than normal, might try that then check the pressure.

Re: 2000 Grand Prix fuel pump replacement.

You might want to check out the fuel pump relay/regulator, if my memory serves me right. I'll get the correct name of it. It's a white, ceramic unit that only costs about 15.00. I remember having this problem with my GTP. Your GT may not have this unit. I almost spent over $250.00 on a fuel pump and related parts. hope this helps.

Re: 2000 Grand Prix fuel pump replacement.

Only GTP's have the fuel pump resistor that you mentioned craddock65, the GT's and SE's don't. An oxygen sensor would have nothing to do with a noisy fuel pump (although it could cause the stalling, it would normally trip a CEL light if it were that bad), so I believe bnayor and maxwedge are steering you in the right direction Grim4208. Re: 2000 Grand Prix fuel pump replacement.

As Rich pointed out a GT/SE does not have the fuel pump resistor like a L67 GTP or the hi-speed fuel pump relay, therefore it is ill advised to suggest to a GT/SE owner to check it out and confuse matters.
