Evaporator Coil Leaking

97 Voyager LE with 3.8

Dealer wants $1500 to replace the evaporator coil. Lost AC last summer, recharged with dye. Dye now showing (had it looked at for the first time a year later, not using the AC much except in the summer) on the tube that drains the evaporator. Something like that.

Anyway, the dealer doesn't seem to want to a chemical sealant but I'm not sure what their motives are. Probably to get me to spend another huge amount of money on the POS. It's only got 90k on it, I bought it 1 year ago for $10k and I've since spent over $5k in repairs. Too late to get rid of it now, I'm in too deep.

Does anyone have any experience with chemical sealants in the AC realm? Good or bad? I'm not sure how bad the leak is. I'm just going to use it until it stops working and then decide then. But, if it goes while we are on a summer road trip, I want to be prepared.

Thanks!

Re: Evaporator Coil Leaking

it all depends on the size of the leak. I tried it on my father's 2001 ram, same as yours with the evaporator. The stuff I used was Red Tek pro sealer. They say it should work on leaks that leak as much as a pound a day. Yours would hold about two pounds. It did not work for us. He lost all his in about 5 hours. You can get the kit and do it yourself, all you have to lose is the money you spent on the kit.
