Re: how do i take a tire off the rim my self
I’ve done it once, and it took 2 or 3 crowbars. And I’m not sure if I damaged the bead on the tire. But if I had to guess, I probably did. Not a big deal, if the tire is scrap.

If you decide to try this be very careful as you may cause damage to the rim if you pry too hard. Also you will need to have some way to break the bead down, otherwise it won't come off.

Re: how do i take a tire off the rim my self
If you have a solid post to slide the wheel over and a long crowbar, you could probably do it like the machine in a tire shop. It will take a lot of elbow grease and have some liquid soap around to spray on the rim edge and bead to more easily slide the tire bead over the rim edge. Good Luck.

Re: how do i take a tire off the rim my self
if you hav an old bumper jack, that will get the bead broke down.
You just put the bottom of the Bumpr Jack on the tire, as close to the rim as possible(but NOT on it) and jack the jack up. Should pop of the bead , but soap will help loosen it with out much effort. It really does require at least two prybars. The thinner the better. Much like taking a bicycle tire off, if you've evr done that. I used to hav to do this when I was poor. ![]() plus when I was to young to drive, I worked at a truck stop, changing semi tires, BY HAND ! ![]() That was a joke of a job In a year I changed 2 tires ![]() Good Luck gpturbo !

Tire places charge $2-$3 each to mount or dismount a tire, why bother?

Where the Hell you liven Rich?
1975 ? ![]() $10-12 is what I'd charge to swap 1 tire out. But if you hav 4 thats $40-48 ! Most of the time you get a discount when you purchase tires, but then they get ya with the $3-4 for each tire to dispose of. And then you hav, new vavle stems its a no win battle......

Re: how do i take a tire off the rim my self
Letting all the air out of the tire would be an easier way instead of prying it off.

Re: how do i take a tire off the rim my self
if the tires are to be scrapped just cut them off with a sawsall or dremel. the only reason i can think of for removing tires yourself is to sell the wheels on ebay and save yourself some shipping.
my 1950 GMC still has split rims and tube tires so you can fix a flat yourself. |

Re: how do i take a tire off the rim my self
We have a lot of new/used tire places around here and most charge $3 off, $3 on, $6 total per tire. They try to get you on the balancing, new valve stems, etc....
