93 GA..Bad Compressor???

Hi read all the other threads, did what they said and here's what i got...

R-134a pressure good.
Jumpered switch (high side hose) ..Fan engaged but not the compressor
switched relays around with known good one. Fan on, no A/C clutch when jumpered.
A/C fuse good
Clutch will move by hand..not stuck.

Everything electrical seems fine unless i missed something.

SO does this mean i need a new compressor......

thanks
Mike

Re: 93 GA..Bad Compressor???

FYI i think the 93 grand am uses freon and not r-134a unless yours has been retrofitted. if it still uses freon, you can't recharge the a/c with the R-134a cans from autozone. I don't know if you need a new compressor, but i am sure you've found out that it is very expensive and labor intensive, b/c they pretty much have to take part of the engine off the car.

Re: 93 GA..Bad Compressor???

Did you check for power at the compressor when the ac is engaged? Unplug the compressor, make sure the connector is away from any moving parts, turn the ac on, see if there is power at the connector. If there is, your clutch is probably bad. It can be replaced without discharging the ac, but its a real pain. I replaced my compressor, took a couple of hours. On the quad cars it comes out the bottom and a couple of the bolts are difficult to reach. Have not done one on a v6 car yet, but I don't think they are too difficult to get at. Good luck.

Re: 93 GA..Bad Compressor???

From what you discribed Sprint45, it does sound like the clutch is bad.
At this point , being a 93' , you might as well replace the intire compressor and get it retrofited with the new r-134a(yours has r-12).

compressor , does need to come off from the bottom, pita.
You didnt say what engine so, good luck.
