540 as reliable as 528

I'm going to buy a used 98-2000 5 series and want to know if the 540 has many problems compared to the 528.I found one of each for about the same price but my Brother said the 540 has problems and I should go for the 528.Whats the scoop?

Re: 540 as reliable as 528

well i don't know of the 2 engs. main probs. but i will tell u things ain't fun to replace on the 540 (not much space) and hope u never have head probs with it ever!besides that the 528 gets better gas milage and the six cylider is BMW's best eng. also things are more expensive for the V8.But both cars a very reliable cars just saying when things occur i rather work on a six cylinder with room to spare the a stuff in there V8 think of changing the plugs in that thing heh.
