420a Smoking

Man o man... I have trhe 420a... Eclipse RS (97)... and it has developed the problem of a faulty IAT... I assumed this was why, but I have second thoughts...

On startup... the car runs fine... but after running for awhile... the car begins to smoke, really bad... a light-black smoke (I think)... and you can smell straight gas... (the car is running really rich)... I had on my AC the other night, and I was pulling up to a stop sign... I pushed in the clutch and watched the tachometer, as it bounced from zero to 700 rpms... it only bounced that low once, stuttered then went back to 700-800 rpms... I hit the accelerator, hit 4k rpms, and dropped it... the same thing happened... the car is running really rich while sitting... and I'm not sure if it leans out at the top or what, but it's not nearly as fast/responsive as it used to be...

the car idles ok when the A/C is off, but still smokes...
I have noticed that sometimes, if I hold higher RPMs and push in the clutch (to stop) the car takes a long time to drop back to it's idle RPMs, it likes to drop really fast to 2k RPM and then takes awhile to drop back to idle...

Any ideas ,or help...
anyone know of somewhere I can buy the IAT, anybody have PN???

Thanks in advance,
-Mikelb

Mine does this sometime too. My EGR valve is bad. So I know that's causing the problem for me. It just sits at 2k sometimes when rolling up, and doesn't drop until you're about to stop.

My rpms would suck at idle when my TPS and/or the IAC was bad.

For the richness you may have a leak, either head or FIs.

I personally say it's time to take it to a shop that has a good computer and get all the senors checked out. You're gas mileage has to suck ass.

Had it scanned... the IAT is gone... I even checked it... so I know that's a problem... and that tells the car how much gas to give based on outside temp... right?

Gas mileage isn't too bad... less it's s'posed to get more than 27MPG
