Loss of power:Poor acceleration

'97 2.2 188,000 mi.

OK when cold. Problem gets worse as engine gets hotter. Exhaust sputters more as condition worsens. No stalling, no check engine light, shifts slow but OK, no other problem. Runs fine at 55mph....but, getting to 55 takes about as long as a full cement truck.

-new plugs and wires
-removed cat converter
-new muffler
-new air filter
-new fuel filter

Can't figure it out??????????

Re: Loss of power:Poor acceleration

Could the injectors be clogged? Try using fuel injector or comeplete fuel system cleaner.

Re: Loss of power:Poor acceleration

I tried the "pour in the tank" injector cleaner. No luck. Might try to have them cleaned manually, but I doubt that's the problem.

Re: Loss of power:Poor acceleration

It shifts all the way up, but it still could be the problem. Sometimes the timing of the shifts are different.
Haven't figured it out yet, but it runs better in the cold. Come on winter!

Re: Loss of power:Poor acceleration

chec you coolant temp sensor. If a car runs fine cold but gets worse as the engine warms up, the PCM may think the engine is still cold when in fact its not. If the coolant tems sensor is bad the car will run rich and hesitate to start after the engine has warmed up.

Re: Loss of power:Poor acceleration

Coolant temp sensor would set off the check engine light if it were bad...I checked anyway. It''s working.

Re: Loss of power:Poor acceleration

Running Fuel Pressure. I have no way to measure that. I don't think it's fuel, but it's possible. New filter recently. If it were the pump, it would have died already after several months of this.

If it's the tranny, then it's pretty simple. Take it in and spend the 1-2-3 thousand or take it apart yourself and have no car for the several weeks it takes you to figure out what's wrong.
