Dexcool or non Dexcool?
97 3.1 GA SE
I'm getting ready to flush my coolant, and wondering what to replace it with. Pontiac obviously recommends Dexcool, but I've gotten vibes from people (mechanics and such) that it's not the best choice. Is there something about dexcool that I should be aware of? What are it's advantages/disadvantages? What else can I use in my coolant system? Thanks! |

Re: Dexcool or non Dexcool?
Thiers nothing wrong with green antifreeze.
They recomend it for two reasons. One it gives a 10deg plus/minus advantage. mainly due to sodium glyco. Two it is supposed to hav a less chemical reaction between the may metals within the engine. steel block, aluminum heads/intake, brass recirculator tubes I personally dont like dex because it gets a brownish foam build up in the resivour. Makes it hard to tell if oil contamination is in the dex, because it always looks nasty. Cost more most of the time too. They do sell an aditive, I think its called "WET", which you add to the coolant(not sure if it works in both) and it is suposed to giv you cooler runing temps. Havnt tried it yet myself, but I'm sure I will just to see how and if it works.

Re: Dexcool or non Dexcool?
Here is the deal the product you are referring to is called water wetter and it breaks the surface tenson in the water to allow it to absorb more heat. Now the water wetter is liquid soap like Dawn or Joy. I put about 12 oz in my car and it did lower the temp about 15 degrees.
